Saginaw River--MapsWritten by Anna Mae Maday, Manager, Eddy Historical & Genealogy Collection of Hoyt Public Library in Saginaw, Michigan September 2000 click for larger view
| This map was originally published for the Annual Report of the Board of Trade in 1884, and shows where the lumber mills were on the Saginaw River from Bay City to Saginaw. A version of this map appears in the the book, Logging the White Pine in the Saginaw Valley. Years ago, historian Ralph Stroebel compiled a card file list of lumbering firms along the river. The Hoyt Library was able to photocopy this list and had it bound into book format. The Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps, published at the turn of the century, also show sawmill locations. These maps are available on microfilm at the Hoyt Library. Another useful tool in the study of the Saginaw lumbering industry is the reprint edition of the Saginaw County Atlases of 1877, 1896 and 1916. Sources for the study of the lumbering era of Saginaw and Michigan are numerous. A few are listed below. The Goodridge Brothers photographed many lumbering scenes during their career, and a recent book about the photographers, written by Professor Jezierski of Saginaw Valley State University, would be of interest to lumbering era researchers. The river maps showing the sand bars at Carrollton and Zilwaukee (Zilwaukie) may also be helpful to researchers of the lumber industry and can be found on this Saginaw Images Web Site.Suggested Reading- Chapman, Charles C.History of Saginaw County. 1881.
